The peasant Yang Bailao lived with his daughter Xi’er. Because he was poor,Yang Bailao had to borrow money from the despotic landlord Huang Shiren andthen go away to avoid the debt collector employed by the landlord. On the eveof the Spring Festival, Huang Shiren forced Yang Bailao to sell his daughter torepay the debt. Yang Bailao had to commit suicide. Xi’er, who was taken toHuang’s house, was raped by the landlord and then escaped into mountains. Twoyears later, Xi’er’s lover Da Chun returned to his hometown along with theEighth Route Army men. He found Xi’er in a cave and avenged her.
