The opera The Regret for the Past highlights thespirit of Juan Sheng and Zi Jun who dared to oppose feudal ethics and reveals theweaknesses of intellectuals as well. To mark the 100th birthday ofLu Xun, it was adapted by playwrights Wang Quan and Han Wei from the novel ofthe same name by Lu Xun, with the music composed by Shi Guangnan. It was firstperformed by China National Opera & Dance Drama Theater in1981.
